It is hard to believe but our scholarship winners are already finishing their first semester at American high schools. We congratulate them and wish them the best in their continuing U.S. studies. Brief scholarship winner profiles:

Kristína Cinová – Studied at bilingual French-Slovak Gymnázium M.R Štefánika in Košice, Slovakia

Senior at Mercy High School in Burlingame, California

  • 19 years old
  • Native of Stropkov, small town in eastern Slovakia
  • Recipient of the Roma Education Fund scholarship
  • Excellent English, winner of several English language competitions
  • Speaks or knows basics of English, French, Hungarian, Russian, Roma and Slovak
  • Mentions Martin Luther King as one of her role models
  • Has played piano for 11 years; also plays guitar
  • Very interested in languages and arts
  • Passionate about science and interconnection between arts and science
  • Father is a government advisor on Roma minority; mother is an office admin

Richard King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas

  • 18 years old
  • Native of Vlkovce, small village near Poprad in eastern Slovakia
  • Studied at Gymnázium P. O. Hviezdoslava in Kežmarok, Slovakia
  • Excellent student – 3.87 GPA (unweighted)
  • Very hard worker – gets up at 6am and comes home at 8pm every day
  • Works in a bookstore – loves reading, drama and arts
  • Plays piano, guitar, ukulele, violin; sings in a quire
  • Member and leader of several Christian organizations
  • Big fan of NHL and ice hockey. Her dream is to visit an NHL game
  • Wants to study medicine at a top U.S. or European university
  • Father is self-employed; mother is an accountant

Junior at Iowa High School near Lake Charles, Louisana

  • 17 years old
  • From Ružomberok, small town in northern Slovakia
  • Studied at Gymnázium Š. Moyzesa in Ružomberok
  • Excellent English in both writing and speaking
  • Very determined, disciplined, hard-working
  • Practices dance for 14 hours per week – contemporary, jazz, ballet
  • Participated at European and advanced to World Championships in dance
  • Also teaches dance to 3-5-year-old children
  • Very active and interested in sports – yoga, aerobic, scuba diving
  • Interested in languages and creative writing
  • Writes poems regularly
  • Father is a policeman; mother is a secretary
